Playing on the edge.
The Royal Court Theatre, in the heart of London's Chelsea, has been cultivating and supporting new writers for almost seventy years, maintaining a reputation for challenging artistic, social and political orthodoxies. But in 2013, when Vicky Featherstone – the founding director of National Theatre of Scotland – took over as director, the Royal Court was struggling to balance its ambition to disrupt pre-conceived ideas about theatre with a need to attract new sources of funding and to reach out to younger more diverse audiences, without alienating its loyal local supporters.
We worked closely with the director and staff, to harness their enthusiasm and re-focus their energy with a bolder, more confident positioning, a refreshed visual identity and a plan to turn the building into a vital playground for experiment and ideas. Award-winning new works and an active programme beyond the building is expanding the Royal Court's audiences and provoked Time Out to describe it as "The undisputed epicentre of new writing".
